Apple, Tree: Writers on Their Parents comes out September 1 from University of Nebraska Press. For this collection of all-original work, I commissioned 25 writers to explore a trait they’ve inherited from a parent, to reflect on how it affects the lives they lead today—how it shifts their relationship to that parent (sometimes posthumously) and to their sense of self. Lyrical, funny, poignant, heartbreaking, wise—it’s all here.
Apple, Tree’s all-star lineup of writers brings eloquence, integrity, and humor to topics such as arrogance, obsession, psychics, grudges, table manners, luck, and laundry. Contributors include: Laura van den Berg, Sallie Tisdale, Shukree Hassan Tilghman, Clifford Thompson, Angelique Stevens, Avi Steinberg, Lizzie Skurnick, Dana Prescott, Ann Patchett, Kyoko Mori, Laura Miller, Marc Mewshaw, Daniel Mendelsohn, Donna Masini, Mat Johnson, Susan Ito, Jane Hamilton, Lauren Grodstein, John Freeman, Carolyn Ferrell, Lolis Eric Elie, Kate Carroll de Gutes, Leland Cheuk, S. Bear Bergman, and Karen Grigsby Bates.
Together, their pieces form a prismatic meditation on how we make fresh sense of ourselves and our parents when we see the pieces of them that live on in us.
Apple, Tree is UNP’s lead title for fall, so they’re excited! I’m excited! If you are, too, pre-order it now!
